Does Viagra help premature ejaculation?

Answered by Frank · sources checked October 27, 2026 · in What works, what doesn't

Not on its own. In men with normal erections, there’s no convincing evidence that Viagra-type pills delay ejaculation. They can help when erection trouble is part of the problem, and then doctors treat that first.

It’s a logical guess: Viagra is the famous sex pill, so it should help with this too. The research mostly says no, with one important exception, and everything below comes from the studies.

What Viagra does

Viagra (sildenafil) and its cousins, Cialis (tadalafil) and Levitra (vardenafil), belong to a family called PDE5 inhibitors. They help blood flow into the penis, which makes erections easier to get and keep. They don’t act on the ejaculation reflex itself.

What the evidence says

A review of 14 clinical trials concluded there’s no convincing evidence that these pills help men with lifelong premature ejaculation whose erections are normal. The American Urological Association doesn’t list them among the treatments for premature ejaculation alone.

The exception: when erections are part of it

Things change when a man also has trouble with his erections, which is common: in one large study, about a third of men seen for either problem had both. A man who struggles to stay hard may need more intense stimulation, and that can push him over the edge sooner. In that case, the American urologists say to treat the erection problem first, and erection pills are one way to do it. Once the erection is reliable, the hurry often eases.

My take

If your erections are fine and your only problem is timing, Viagra isn’t your answer, and buying it online without a prescription adds risks (fake or tainted products are common). If erections are part of the picture, that’s a conversation for a doctor, and a good one to have. More on the link in premature ejaculation vs erectile dysfunction.
