Do supplements like zinc help premature ejaculation?

Answered by Frank · sources checked October 17, 2026 · in What works, what doesn't

Not convincingly. There’s no good evidence that zinc alone helps, and the few studies of herbal blends are small. And some 'natural' sexual supplements have been found to contain hidden prescription drugs.

Zinc, ginseng, rhodiola, “male stamina” blends: the supplement aisle is full of promises. The appeal is obvious: a capsule feels easier than seeing a doctor or training for weeks. Here’s what the studies say, since I have no experience of my own to offer on supplements.

Zinc

Zinc comes up a lot because it plays a role in male reproductive health. But the study usually quoted to support it was done on rats: moderate doses lengthened the time to ejaculation, higher doses reduced sexual activity. I haven’t found good human trials of zinc on its own for premature ejaculation.

Herbal blends

A few small studies have tested herbal blends that include zinc and reported better control. They’re small, and not enough to count on.

The real risk

Supplements aren’t checked for effectiveness or safety before they’re sold. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regularly finds sexual enhancement products containing hidden drugs, such as the active ingredients of Viagra or Cialis, not listed on the label. For a man taking heart medication (nitrates), that can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.

My take

If a supplement worked reliably, it would be in the urologists' guidelines, and it isn’t. If you want something that acts quickly, numbing sprays have far more evidence (see do delay sprays and numbing creams work). If you want something that lasts, that’s training. A healthy diet doesn’t hurt, of course, but don’t expect a capsule to do the job.
