Usually a mix of things: a reflex that has always been quick, anxiety, arousal built up before you even start, habit, and sometimes a physical cause. Knowing which ones apply to you is the first step.
I asked myself this for years. For a long time my only answer was “that’s just how I’m built”. It turned out to be more interesting than that, and more fixable.
Has it always been like this?
That’s the first thing to sort out. If you’ve finished fast since your very first times, doctors call it lifelong premature ejaculation. That’s my case: I’ve always had it. If it started later, after years without trouble, it’s called acquired, and the reasons tend to be different. I go into that in why am I suddenly finishing faster.
The usual reasons
There’s rarely a single one. Cleveland Clinic and the American Academy of Family Physicians list the same families of causes.
Anxiety and pressure come first. Performance anxiety, stress, tension in the relationship. The more you worry about coming too soon, the more alert your nervous system gets, and alertness speeds the reflex up. More on that in can anxiety cause premature ejaculation.
Then there’s arousal built up before you even start: thinking about sex for hours beforehand can bring you to the edge before anything happens. I had a classic version of this, which I tell in why do I come as soon as I go in.
There’s sensitivity. Some men are more sensitive to stimulation, and some studies have measured it. See is my penis too sensitive.
And there are physical causes: an erection problem, an inflamed prostate, the thyroid, starting or stopping some medications. These are more likely when the problem is recent, and they’re a reason to see a doctor first.
The one nobody mentions: habit
This part is my own view, not a medical finding. Ejaculation is a reflex, and I think reflexes get shaped by how we use them. If for years you’ve finished quickly, in a hurry, without paying attention to what your body is doing, that becomes the normal speed. What reassures me about this idea is that a habit can be retrained.
What to do with the answer
If anything physical rings a bell, start with a doctor. If it’s mostly anxiety, built-up arousal and habit, those can all be worked on. I go through all the causes in more detail in the guide on what causes premature ejaculation.
