Why am I suddenly finishing faster than before?

Answered by Frank · sources checked October 26, 2026 · in What causes it

When it appears after years without trouble, doctors call it acquired premature ejaculation, and it often has a cause: anxiety or stress, a relationship problem, erection trouble, a medication, sometimes the thyroid or prostate. See a doctor first.

This is a different situation from mine. I’ve always finished fast. If you used to be fine and something changed, the most useful thing I can do is explain why doctors take that change seriously, and why it’s often good news in disguise.

It has a name, and usually a reason

Premature ejaculation that appears after a period of normal control is called “acquired”. Unlike the lifelong kind, it often has an identifiable cause. The American Academy of Family Physicians lists the usual suspects: performance anxiety, psychological or relationship difficulties, erectile dysfunction, and taking or stopping certain medications or drugs. Less often, an overactive thyroid or an inflamed prostate.

The common ones

Stress and anxiety come up the most. A rough patch at work, a new relationship, a bad experience that keeps replaying: the more on edge you are, the faster the reflex fires.

Erection trouble is the other big one. A man who struggles to keep his erection may need more intense stimulation to stay hard, and that pushes him over the edge sooner. Doctors deal with the erection first, see is premature ejaculation the same as erectile dysfunction.

Medication matters too: starting or stopping some drugs, antidepressants in particular, can change ejaculation timing.

Why this is often good news

When there’s a cause, dealing with it often changes the picture. In men with an overactive thyroid, about half had premature ejaculation, and only 15% still did once their thyroid was back to normal. In men with prostate inflammation who were treated, most saw their time clearly improve without the problem coming back months later.

When to go and see a doctor

If it’s recent, start there, before any exercise or product. Especially if you also have trouble with erections, pain when you ejaculate, urinary symptoms, signs like palpitations, weight loss or nervousness, if it started after a change in medication, or if it’s weighing on your mood. A simple check-up can rule a lot out.

And if nothing physical turns up, the anxiety side is very workable. I write about it in can anxiety cause premature ejaculation.
