Does alcohol make you last longer?

Answered by Frank · sources checked November 7, 2026 · in What works, what doesn't

Sometimes a little, because it dulls sensation and calms nerves. But it also weakens erections, there’s almost no research backing it as a strategy, and relying on it is a bad habit to build.

Sometimes a little, and plenty of men notice it after a few drinks. Some start counting on it. What’s actually known about it is thin, and what follows comes from the research only.

Why it can seem to work

Alcohol is a depressant: it slows the nervous system down and dulls sensation. Less sensation and less nervousness can mean a bit more time.

The research gap

I couldn’t find any serious study testing alcohol as a way to delay ejaculation in men with premature ejaculation. What exists is mostly animal research and studies of heavy drinkers. So any claim that “a couple of beers is the fix” is just anecdote.

What it costs

Drinking too much is one of the usual causes of occasional erection problems, according to the NHS. Studies in the lab have also found that alcohol reduces the erection response. So the drink that might buy you a minute can also make it harder to stay hard. And the dependence is the real trap: if you can only feel confident after drinking, it reinforces the idea that sober sex is the problem.

My take

There’s nothing wrong with a glass of wine on a nice evening. But as a strategy, it’s unreliable, it has a cost, and it doesn’t teach your body anything. The anxiety it dulls is better dealt with directly; I write about it in is premature ejaculation psychological or physical. And if you notice you need a drink to have sex at all, or your erections are suffering, that’s worth raising with a doctor.
